New NAGB Hours & Free Gallery Day for Bahamians

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is pleased to announce that we have extended our hours to allow the Bahamian public and our visitors more opportunities to engage and experience our wonderful Gallery and the art within.

On January 1st, 2012, John Cox, the founder of the artists’ cooperative Popopstudios International Center for the Visual Arts, took on the position of Chief Curator at The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, appointed by incoming Director, Amanda Coulson.

Covering his 75 years of life and his artistic career with 143 paintings, “Happy Birthday To Me” reflects the complicated journey of a man before his time practicing a form of art that had not caught on in the landscape of the Bahamian art world, a form of art that is difficult to engage with and was not readily accepted by viewers to be “authentically Bahamian” art.

Twelve Bahamian amateur artists are finally getting their chance to shine. The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is preparing to host their one-night-only spotlight honoring the creative visions of non-established or non-professional artists in society with their All-Star Amateur Artist Night at the Gallery grounds this Friday, January 20, 2012.

Earlier this year, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas began a comprehensive and transparent search, locally and worldwide, to fill a number of positions including Director, Assistant Educational Officer, Curatorial Assistant and Curatorial Trainees.

On sale now at The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas are a recently donated collection of vintage art magazines and journals, the proceeds of which will be used to buy new material for the NAGB Library. We will be selling these items every Saturday until the end of 2011.
