Jeffrey Meris "The Middle Passage" Three thousand seven hundred miles of onerous oceans heralded the production of cotton in The New World some 300 years ago. The “Middle Passage” is a reincarnation of the epic unprecedented seventh century journey; a cargo of seven million humans trafficked to become cotton picking Negroes. Dialogue is conjured between themes of modern and historical means of migration, Afro-Caribbean slavery and ultimately on the paradox that cotton can be both comforting and laborious in the same tongue. As forgiving as it seems, cotton accumulates sixteen percent of the world’s pesticides. This installation aims to interact both physically and visually with the audience, ultimately creating ‘confabulation’.
